Text: Compassion and the Individual by Tenzin Gyatso, The Fourteenth Dalai Lama

Jigsawing

Today, we will have a Socratic Seminar using "Compassion and the Individual." I want you to focus specifically on diction analysis, so you will need to do some close re-reading.
Divide text into sections:
  1. Section 1 - "The Purpose of Life," "How to Achieve Happiness," and "Our Need for Love."
  2. Section 2- "Developing Compassion" and "How Can We Start"
  3. Section 3- "Friends and Enemies" and "Compassion and the World"
(2 groups per sections)
Work with your group to gather notes on a 3 column chart. (It Says, I Say, And So OR CD/CM1/CM2)

Socratic Seminar

Groups that did the same sections will meet together in the inner circle while others observe and annotate texts.
7 minutes per circle!
Use the chart you just created AND the notes handout you completed for homework.
Don't be afraid to reference other texts that we have done; we need to begin to synthesize this information!

Writing

Write a paragraph analyzing Gyatso's use of diction in "Compassion and the Individual."
Paragraph Structure:
  • Topic Sentence- Describe his overall use of word choice to achieve his purpose. This sentence may or may not contain the word "diction."
  • Chunk 1
  • Chunk 2
(For your two chunks, choose text evidence that works together for a similar purpose. The whole paragraph should flow together as one.)
